Shinola Detroit 18 Month Planner Late 2016 and 2017

For years, I've used a small, inexpensive pocket planner that I toss in my purse to record my classes, appointments and what not. In 2016 with everything going on with David, I decided that I needed something bigger to document our daily lives in. I am not a big moleskine fan nor am I a fan of the planners I've seen at Michaels and the like. They just didn't work for me. I stumbled upon the Detroit planners at Book Soup in Los Angeles and they've been a game changer for me.

Above is a quick flip through of my planner that I began in late 2016 and worked my way through 2017 in. It's not a replacement for my art journal (nor will it ever be.) It's my place to make note of any daily events, take notes and document what's important to me. It's far from art making for me but it's exactly what I need it to be in recording life with a pen or pencil.

I've already started a new Shinola Detroit Planner. My goal for this year is to hopefully add more about my process of art making in them as well as to be able to record expenses. I'm going to try to make it a catch all for every bit of my daily life in the coming year. We'll see how far I get with it but so far, I'm off to a good start.

Nice, Kelly!
I stopped using a planner a few years ago..... I dont know why... I thought I’d move to digital. That’s not very exciting. Maybe it is time to start again.

Kelly, your journey to using a daily planner is almost exactly like mine - I too started out painting in it but quickly gave up on that. Like you, I add daily ephemera from travels, museum visits and also things like address labels from international purchases and Etsy seller thank you notes and notes from friends/family. Although I use a moleskine planner, it's quite similar in shape and design to the Shinola.
Oh and my love of stickers is equally strong. When I travel internationally I'm always on the lookout for 'graffiti' stickers, my favorite! The other thing I do is add my iphone photos from travels using 'contact sheets' on computer to print out small strips of photos. I also order prints from Parabo Press -- the matte paper they use is perfect for my style and I enjoy reusing their kraft-paper packaging in bookmaking projects.
Thank you -- your blog posts are always written from such an authentic and generous place. I've enjoyed and benefited from your expertise and resources (suppliers and book recs!) over the years. Cheers to you!
